While “cognitive dissonance” technically means something else (it’s the discomfort one feels when presented with evidence proving one’s belief false), I agree with you wholeheartedly. Hero worship of known figures too often stands in the way of getting things done properly, in every field, and all walks of life, from technology through politics to even science.
